Soulange magnolia flower

In botany, an x in a scientific name identifies a hybrid, as in name for a favorite spring blossom of mine, the beautiful soulange magnolia, Magnolia × soulangeana. Or, you might think of the 2x4s you use to build a house, or the 4×4 truck you use to bring them home.

Bio x Design means making living systems (biological) on purpose (by design).

And it means a hybridization of ecological science with design thinking, designing and creating bioabundant and ecologically rich ecosystems.

Bio x Design is the consulting home of Steve Patterson.

For the past 30 years, ecological restoration has been my professional practice. I received my Ph.D. in Geography from UCLA, with a specialization in Biogeography. I have developed restoration and ecological enhancement plans for a wide range of ecosystem types, including wet meadows, freshwater marsh, shallow freshwater lagoons, salt marsh, riparian woodland, streams, coastal sage and dune scrub, grasslands, and oak woodland. In recent years I have worked on protecting and restoring water quality in lakes and reservoirs. Throughout my time as restoration ecologist, my work has emphasized collaborating, working with project proponents, engineers, and landscape architects to creatively integrate ecological restoration and ecosystem design in multifaceted project. I am recognized as a Certified Ecological Designer by the American Ecological Engineering Society.
