Biology x Design =
Innovative environmental problem-solving
At Bio x Design (“bio by design“) we restore, design, and build ecosystems. Our work combines ecological science with design thinking to restore ecological systems and the values and services they provide, and to design and build new systems that solve problems and create new social and economic value.
Our work has ranged from water quality and ecological restoration plans for a hypereutrophic water supply reservoir in rural eastern Oklahoma to efforts to develop patches of natural systems
and ecosystem services in places as intensely urban as the Los Angeles River and its tributaries in southern California, from pilot studies of innovative periphyton-based cultured ecologies in the Tahoe Basin to plans for large-scale salt marsh creation for a wetland park in the Pearl River basin of southern China.
We are experienced as both project leaders and collaborative team players. We organize and run ecological design charrettes and workshops that bring stakeholders, designers, scientists, and engineers together to create new ideas and build project momentum.
We have worked with clients as varied as public water supply agencies, local parks and public works departments, state land conservancies, and private developers and have helped them with everything from developing novel ecologically-based stormwater treatment systems to resolving long standing permitting conflicts with regulatory agencies through innovative restoration and mitigation planning.
